Trouble with internet, help please!!?

I recently purchased a new computer with windows vista, when I get on the internet (cable) it runs fine. Then, when I try and open up an Ares or Limewire program, the internet explorer will quit working and the program(s) will say they are being blocked by a firewall...how can I fix this so I can get both of them to run at the same time?? Thanks!
