My house exterior is sand stone can i put mortar over the stone to minimize to stone look?

i saw a fireplace in a magazine and liked the finish. not sure but it appears troweled on mortar or stucco. only a small portion of the stone was visible, i thought it might work to hide or minimize the ugly stone on the exterior of my house.
