Writing a novel about the Black Panthers. I did research on Huey Newton to understand the history. Any ideas?

Writing a novel called "The Radical" centered on the Black Panthers. The protagonist is Anne Davis, a young black woman, whom joins the Panthers at age 18, thirteen years after she sees cops murder her parents during a traffic stop. Got any ideas? The plot is during a peace rally in Oakland, the cops show up and toss tear gas into the crowd causing confusion and then proceed to ault and arrest some of the protesters. Fights break out and two cops end up dead. Backup arrives and since Anne is the nearest two the corpses, she is charged with murder. The rest of the story she is in front of a jury pleading her case for innocence while her friends come testify in her behalf. The rest of the story is her waiting to see if she will be judged "not guilty".
