Is there a paradox to the gay marriage struggle?

Is it an open secret that the issue of gay marriage is really an issue of parity between s and heterouals. The front-line of this struggle is California and Proposition 8. Here is the paradox; if gay marriage is a vehicle towards sociocultural 'normalcy' in American society, and that process is obstructed in California due to popular disapproval, how can gay marriage serve as a vehicle towards sociocultural normalcy and parity? As reversing Proposition 8 would require exactly what gay marriage is supposed to create?
